VertaseFLI Forges Ahead

Posted on Friday, 07 October 2011 01:58PM by Chris Piddington
VertaseFLI has recently secured a contract at the Former Ford Foundry in Leamington Spa. This large site, which covers over 8 hectares, was used as a foundry since the end of the 19th century, with Ford operating the site in the second half of the 20th Century, until its eventual close in 2007.

The project entails the demolition of the historic factory buildings and remediation of a series of contaminated soil hotspots across the site.  As well as the contaminated soils, a large number of underground fuel storage tanks, a petrol pipeline and areas known to contain free phase oil are present on site and these will all be addressed during the works.  Further, as part of the works the whole site will be prepared for the subsequent food store and hotel development including the removal of all surface hardstanding with including any in-ground obstructions.

Contaminated soils will be treated using a combination of bioremediation or chemical stabilisation, while any free phase oils or contaminated waters recovered from the ground or within the fuel tanks will be treated on site using VertaseFLI water treatment plant

The site does present a number of particular constraints that have to be addressed including buildings of archaeological significance, safe demolition of a series of very tall chimney structures and working adjacent to a busy rail line and a highway, both of which will require extensive liaison with the local highways and Network Rail to facilitate temporary closures during the works.

The project represents a highly sustainable approach to remediation; all contaminated soils will be treated and re-used on site with no disposal to landfill while all the brick and concrete recovered as part of the demolition works will be processed for re-use within the development as a recycled aggregate.  This re-use of material will enable the construction levels at the site to be achieved without the need to import additional materials at what would be significant costs.

We have also agreed a very strict programme including phase release to allow Morrisons to expedite construction of their store.
