CASE STUDY: MERCURY STABILISATION

CASE STUDY: MERCURY STABILISATION
Client: Miller Argent (South Wales) Limited
Value: £300,000
Activities: Stabilisation
Site Summary
During site works, at the former landfill site at Ffos-Y-Fran, soils containing leachable mercury above site specific criteria were encountered. As part of the remediation strategy, mercury contaminated material was to be treated by means of stabilisation/solidification (S/S) processes. During comprehensive research and development in the VertaseFLI S/S laboratory,  a suitable mix design was developed to be utilised at an on-site scale.

Pilot Trial
A preferred S/S mix design was established during laboratory trials. This was implemented at a larger, field scale to demonstrate that successful results achieved in the laboratory would also be attained on site. Excavators with specialist mixing buckets were used to apply and mix the S/S treatment binder with the mercury impacted material. Spot samples of treated material were recovered, allowed to cure and then subjected to stringent validation testing as above. This provided confidence in the selected mix methodology and mix design to achieve the remediation target at an on site scale. Furthermore, any scaling factors due to site application were identified and evaluated for improved application during the treatment stage proper.

Full Scale Treatment
Following the success of the laboratory and pilot scale trials, and taking into account scaling factors, VertaseFLI conducted the full scale treatment of circa. 12,000m3 employing a scaled up method of that outlined above.  In accordance with the Remediation Strategy, validation testing of treated material was conducted as detailed above to confirm that all remediation criteria were met.

From the initial design phase in the laboratory, through to the full scale on site treatment, VertaseFLI have successfully developed, implemented and validated a cost beneficial solution for mercury impacted material, which would have otherwise required disposal to an off-site landfill facility.
