CASE STUDY: LARGE SCALE REMEDIATION

CASE STUDY: LARGE SCALE REMEDIATION
Client: Bellway Homes & Pritchard Developments
Value: £820,000
Activities: Asbestos removal, demolition, site investigation and remediation scheme design, dual phase and bio-remediation.
Summary
VertaseFLI was employed to complete removal of asbestos, demolition, remediation & profiling earthworks on this industrial facility in Cannock.
Following removal of a significant volume of notifiable asbestos, demolition was undertaken on a 27,000m2 factory building, a large waste water treatment plant including substantial concrete storage/treatment tanks, and other ancillary buildings. Significant credits and secondary aggregate were recovered helping to off set the cost of remediation.

Remediation works
Remediation encompassed further site investigation & delineation works, design and regulatory approval of remediation strategy, bio-remediation of chlorinated solvent and TPH contaminated soils  and recovery/reuse of a significant quantity of PFA used to backfill a former basement.

However, the main remediation works were to address chlorinated solvent contamination within  groundwater. Trichloroethene, Cis 1,2 Dichloroethene, and Vinyl Chloride were present as both dissolved and DNAPL (dense non aqueous phase liquid). The chlorinated solvent contamination was present in varying concentrations over a very large plume area although through further delineation by VertaseFLI, three individual Zones within the  main plume area were found to have significant concentrations above the average and which were subsequently subjected to comprehensive dual phase sparging and vapour recovery activities.

288 treatment wells (sparge points) were installed into the saturated zones up to depths of 10 mbgl. Vapour recovery was via specially designed trenches installed across and slightly beyond the sparge zones.  Recovered vapours were collected at an appropriate treatment plant for separation and final disposal via activated carbon.

Dual Phase System
The demolition and subsequent re-profiling earthworks (cut and fill of a combination of approximately 50,000 m3 of treated soils and site produced secondary  aggregate) were programmed to allow early set up and operation of the dual phase system to maximise treatment time. Dual phase activities continued for 26 weeks and met the SSTL’s established by the client’s environmental consultant.

Multi-discipline Project
The project clearly demonstrates the importance of interaction between demolition , groundwater and soils remediation, and post remediation works such as pre-profiling earthworks. It also confirms the expertise and experience of VertaseFLI in providing a multi-disciplined approach to redevelopment of brownfield sites.
