CASE STUDY: LANDFILL RECLAMATION

CASE STUDY: LANDFILL RECLAMATION
Client: Miller Argent (South Wales)
Value: £5,000,000
Activities: Site investigation, physical and biological treatment, stabilisation, off site disposal, earthworks
Specification
VertaseFLI have been contracted to carry out a significant landfill reclamation project on this massive open cast coal site in South Wales. Vertase were involved for several years prior to works commencing being an integral member of the design consortium which was established to obtain the planning permission for one of the largest open cast sites in Europe. Reclamation was required to three former local authority landfills, which were constructed over significant coal reserves. Our brief was to establish and mitigate risks to controlled waters and human health, excavation, treatment, re-instatement and export of non-treatable wastes

Site Investigation
Vertase FLI carried out intensive site investigations to fully delineate the tips in order to ascertain cost certainty and to agree programmes with the client. Various trials were undertaken to establish the most appropriate remediation methodology and for establishing the most appropriate design for the cement stabilisation. Extensive negotiations were undertaken with the Environment Agency, local contaminated land officer, HMR&C, ecologists and other interested parties

Reclamation and Remediation
Works involved the excavation of landfilled wastes consisting of domestic, commercial and colliery spoil. Earthworks were completed in extremely challenging conditions as the site was located at the summit of a welsh mountain.

Remediation included:

  • The excavation and physical processing of 330 000 m3
    of landfill wastes and soils
  • Bio-remediation and composting of over 40 000 m3
  • Cement stabilisation of over 50 000 m3
    of heavy metal contaminated soils
  • Segregation of 3000 m3
    of asbestos
  • Off site disposal of 29 000 m3
    of non-treatable wastes
  • Re-instatement of over 280 000 m3
    of recovered soils and aggregate
  • Collection, treatment and disposal of 100’s m3
    of landfill leachate
Works were carried out under our Mobile Treatment Licence and the recovered soils and materials will be used by the client for various engineering works during open cast mining and in the final restoration of the mine
