CASE STUDY: IN-SITU BIOREMEDIATION

CASE STUDY: IN-SITU BIOREMEDIATION
Client: Chevron Texaco Ltd
Value: £93,000
Activities: Dual phase, in–situ bio-remediation
Site History
Fuel from a pipe leak at a service station in Colchester, Essex was migrating off site from underneath the forecourt towards neighbouring residential properties. As part of a complete redevelopment of the site, VertaseFLI Was asked to provide mobile in-situ equipment to capture contaminated water and product leaving site and to remove soil vapours and all associated licenses and consents.

Installation
The unit was installed in a shipping container for mobility and has been installed in a corner of the site, behind a purpose built fence. The entire system consisted of the container, aqueous and vapour phase carbon filters and an oil water separator. When the unit was removed from site, the fence was also removed along with the container and filters.
During the excavation and replacement of the fuel tanks by the main contractor, VertaseFLI Also applied chemicals to enhance naturally occurring biological breakdown of the hydrocarbons in the source zone.

Operation
The system installed runs for compressed air driven pumps and a side channel suction blower automatically. Due to the proximity of the neighbours and the urban setting, the unit was not built with integrated sound attenuation measures but was controlled by a timer system so that the system was only active during the working day. This eliminated the risk of any disturbance from the system out of working hours.
The system was fully equipped with safety features such as detonation arrestors and explosive limit sensors so that it complies with ATEX regulations.
