CASE STUDY: FORMER MANUFACTURING FACILITY REMEDIATION

CASE STUDY: FORMER MANUFACTURING FACILITY REMEDIATION
Client: George Wimpey (West Midlands) Ltd
Value: £250,000
Activities: Physical and biological treatment, LNAPL recovery, dual phase, earthworks
Summary
The brief was to undertake remediation works at the former safe works in Wolverhampton, which was to be redeveloped for residential housing. The site had been contaminated with hydrocarbons and volatile compounds to both soils and groundwater as a result of historical operations.

Site Works
VertaseFLI Ltd were employed to undertake the following works at the site:

  • Preparation of a bioremediation treatment area.
  • Excavation, segregation and processing of the hydrocarbon contaminated soils identified.
  • Construction of windrows for ex-situ bioremediation.
  • Turning of windrows to promote bioremediation.
  • Replacement of treated and validated material within the site.
  • In-situ remediation of volatile compounds present in the soils and groundwater.
  • Ex-situ remediation of future hotspots identified during building demolition.

Pre-Demolition Remediation
In order to meet the clients development programme, remediation works were undertaken prior to demolition and ran concurrently. Works consisted of excavation of hydrocarbon contaminated soils from within the confines of a building, with the remediation treatment beds also being placed in an existing building to maximise the treatment season.
An in-situ system was designed, built and installed by VertaseFLI Ltd to treat BTEX compounds present to soils and shallow perched water, within the building footprint.
During demolition works on other areas of the site, previously unidentified hotspots were discovered by the consulting engineer which were also treated by ex-situ bioremediation.
All of the works were undertaken in accordance with our Mobile Treatment Licence, and in close conjunction with the clients consultant to enable works to be completed with minimum disruption to the client.
