CASE STUDY: EARTHWORKS AND REMEDIATION

CASE STUDY: EARTHWORKS AND REMEDIATION
Client: Glenkerrin Developments Ltd
Value: £270,000
Activities: ‘Hot Spot’ Identification & Removal, Clean Capping, Layer and Geogrid, construction of Tower Crane Bases
Summary
VertaseFLI Limited were employed by Glenkerrin Developments Ltd to carry out earthworks and remediation works at the Former Steel Works, Isle of Dogs, London. The site was in a particularly challenging location opposite a school entrance and surrounded by high density housing. Prior to commencement of the works, meetings were held with the local residents committee and the school.

Health & Safety
Health & safety being of paramount importance, it was agreed that the site access would be closed during school opening and closing times. A school timetable was provided to ensure that all noise was kept to a minimum during exam periods, in exchange for these concessions the site was permitted to commence works at 7:00am on weekdays.

Hot Spots
The site contained ‘hot spots’ of asbestos contamination that had to be identified, sampled and removed from the site to a licensed facility. The development works involved the construction of various basement structures and therefore part of the contract was to remove surplus material from the site. The site was then covered with a geo-grid and an imported clean capping layer so that construction works could commence.

During the works, which required the efficient co-ordination of over 400 wagons, not a single complaint was received . VertaseFLI were able to achieve this through effective liaison and communication with members of the local community and the school, prior to commencement on site.
